

Dr. Hazlett was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1932, to James F. and Anna Hazlett. David was the owner of a very curious and inventive mind and had a calling early on to become a physician. After earning his M.D. from The University of Pittsburgh in 1958, he practiced medicine for over 60 years, both as a military and civilian physician. He was a veteran of both the Korean War and Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army (Ret. Colonel), and was awarded a Bronze Star.
During his military career, Dr. Hazlett created the Pulmonary Function Research Lab at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital and was the inventor and designer of pulmonary function diagnostic equipment and programs. On the academic side, he was an adjunct Professor of Medicine at Denver University Medical School and published or was involved in over 300 research papers. After retiring from the military, Dr. Hazlett went to work for the State of Texas at the Texas Center for Infectious Disease, and also supported remote emergency rooms around Texas.
Dr. Hazlett enjoyed many hobbies alongside his passion for healing others. He was an avid skier, sailboat enthusiast, part time rancher, dog show exhibitor, and winemaker.
Dr. Hazlett was preceded in death by his parents, James F. and Anna F Hazlett; brother Lyle Hazlett; stepson Douglas Norton Jr. and his beloved wife Irene Pool Hazlett. He is survived by his sons, David R. Hazlett, Jr and James Joseph Hazlett; stepdaughter Cheryl Foley (Ted) ; stepsons Richard Norton and Bill Norton (Charlotte); grandchildren, David R. Hazlett, III (Mary), Haley Finn Hazlett, Shane James Hazlett, Christopher Foley (Ronni), Jaimie Foley (Sissy), Michael Foley (Mindy), Kurtis Foley, Beth Norton Kurtz (Harrison); Drue Norton (Marisa), Forrest Norton and Tristan Norton and great- grandchildren Loxley, Connor, Charli, Leon, Caleb, Mikey II, Nicholas, Siobhan and Rhys.
The family will receive visitors on March 9, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. (public) at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
