

We mourn the passing of Dr. J. J. Waller, Jr. who was born on March 21, 1931, in Dallas, Texas and passed away on April 1, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas.J. graduated from Reagan High School, attended Rice University and then Baylor College of Medicine, graduating in 1955. He remained involved in both institutions, frequenting reunions and alumni travel adventures. After a rotating internship at Jefferson Davis Hospital, he spent three years in the Air Force as a flight surgeon. Returning to Houston, he worked in general practice for the next twenty years. He was active in the Harris County Medical Society, serving on all committees and boards at one time or another. He was also a delegate to the Texas Medical Association and on the Board of Family Practice. He participated in emergency room activities for a number of years and finally left Houston to move to San Antonio to assume full-time responsibility in emergency medicine after discovering this new passion. He continued this role for the next forty-five years primarily at the Midland ER which he ran for eighteen of those years and at facilities in San Antonio, Austin, and Kerrville. After retiring from the ER at age 80 and for the next ten years, he came back to primary care delivering services at a rural health clinic in Dilley focusing on the underserved population.For many decades, he enjoyed reviewing cases for the Texas Medical Liability Trust (TMLT). J. was dedicated to and involved in the Texas Medical Association and the Bexar County Medical Society where he sat on the Historical Committee as well as contributing frequent book reviews to their periodical. He was a lover of all books and had a library of over 5,000 volumes. He was considered an expert in the history of Texas Medicine and delivered many lectures on the subject. After the death of his first wife, Diana, he married Rebecca in 1989 and expanded his number of children to seven. He was a connoisseur of many things in life, but his ultimate love was family first, closely followed by a love of and a fierce dedication to the art and practice of Medicine.He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida May Scott and Jester Johnson Waller, Sr. and first wife, Diana Waller. Dr. Waller is survived by his beloved wife, Rebecca Waller; children, Chris Welder (Bill), Kathy Stewart, Jeff Waller (Liz), Greg Waller (Donna), Paul Waller (Edith), Brian Clendening and Amy Clendening Szekeres (Jeff); as well as grandchildren, Jenny, Christy, Becky, James, Diana, Eric, Sarah, Anna, Jeffrey, Michael, Daniel, Aaron, Daniel, Caroline, Alexandra, Olivia, Eleanor, Jacquelyn, Jackson, Grant, and Madison and 15 great-grandchildren.Honorary pallbearers will be James Welder, Eric Stewart, Jeffrey Waller, Michael Waller, Caroline Waller, Jacquelyn Clendening and Jackson Szekeres.

Interment will be in Hill Country Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the TMA – The Physicians Benevolent Fund.
