

Dr. Gutierrez lived a long and full life. His passions were many, most especially his wife Judy and his family, his lifelong career as a Family Physician, and his various interests & hobbies.
Dr.Oscar Gutierrez attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, for undergraduate studies. With Medical School to follow at Drake University Health Sciences Center, graduating in 1967.
He set up his medical practice in San Antonio, specializing in Family Practice Medicine. Dr. Gutierrez delivered over 300 babies and assisted in surgery for most of his patients. He held numerous leadership positions at the hospitals he served, including Chief of Medical Staff and Family Practice Chair. He practiced medicine until 2020. Additionally, Dr. Gutierrez was involved in drug research & development as principal investigator for multiple research companies. He also mentored and taught clinical practicum Nurse Practitioners from the UT Health Science Center.

He served in the United States Army Reserves: 1957-1963, 1984-1985

Outside of his career and work, Oscar Gutierrez enjoyed many interests, to include; golf, handball, softball, fencing, wood working, French Pastry cooking, geology/paleontology, astronomy, and hunting to name a few. He was known for picking up a hobby, mastering it, and moving onto the next. Oscar enjoyed growing peppers and citrus in his backyard. He also became very interested in dog training, he took piano lessons, he spoke English and Spanish fluently, and had a working knowledge of French. In their hay-day, Oscar loved dancing the cumbia with his wife Judy, often the last to leave the dancefloor. During their early marriage, Oscar and Judy followed prominent matadors and bullfighting in Mexico.
Dr. Gutierrez was an intellect and kept abreast of current events. He could be counted on for meaningful and honest conversation. He was a port-in-the-storm for those needing advice, and often would stay up into the wee hours of the morning contemplating life and paths to take. He had his mind and quick wit until the day he died.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy Gutierrez; his children, Jody Hancock (William), Sheri Miller (Jay), Dr. Daniel Gutierrez, Maret Valencia (Tony), Michael Gutierrez; his grandchildren, Leanne De la Rosa (Bryan), Meredith Hatzenbuehler (Joshua), Ashley Vernon (John), Steven Valencia (Chelsea), Lorenzo Valencia (Heather), Rosalyn McMahon (Nicholas), Mariana White (Eric), Angelina Gutierrez (Tyler); great grandchildren, Sebastian De la Rosa, Quentin De la Rosa, Bianca De la Rosa, Maximus Hatzenbuehler, Aurora Hatzenbuehler, and Emery Valencia; his brother, Dr. Otto Gutierrez (Dina) and Dr. Oziel Gutierrez (Leticia); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Ofelia Gutierrez; his father, Dr. Oscar Gutierrez; and his son, Alec D’Storm.
