

Dr. Robert "Stan" Thompson, age 74, passed away on December 19, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas. Stan was born to parents, Willie Amos Thompson and Marie Theresa McCuition on November 12, 1947, in the small community of Stamford, Texas. He was the third of three children, the baby of the family and beloved by his older siblings. His family were cotton farmers and leaders in their church. Stan played football in high school and graduated as Salutatorian.
Stan went to college at West Texas A&M for one year and transferred to the University of Houston. He was a strong student, graduating from the University of Houston and continued on to the U of H College of Optometry. He joined the US Army in 1972 and after serving in the military, he started a private optometric practice. He served as an Optometrist in San Antonio for almost 50 years. He and his wife, Betty "Joyce" Thompson were dedicated to their patients as they worked together at Eyes of San Antonio.
He married Joyce later in life and as they blended their families, he became a beloved Daddy to all with his wisdom and gentle words. Stan was a godly man, admired by many, faithful and giving in spirit. He loved the Lord and was a regular member at several large churches in the community throughout the years. His faith grew as he was involved in Bible study and Promise Keepers. He embodied the verse, James 1:19 of being quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. He was so proud to leave a legacy of faith and commitment to Christ to all of his children.
Through the influence of his dad, Stan became a proficient carpenter and gardener and he passed on these skills to his sons. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed many fishing trips with friends and family. He enjoyed going to Aggie games and supporting his children. He liked watching professional football and basketball, especially cheering for the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs.
Stan loved his family and is survived by Daughter Deborah Coates; Son Robert Carraway; Son Kenneth Thompson; Daughter Kathy Workman; Son Christopher Thompson; Sister Nell Rosenquist and affectionately known as "Papa" to his 13 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends January 4, from 3-7 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North. Celebration of Life Service at Cornerstone Church on January 5 at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given in his behalf to samaritanspurse.org, or woundedwarriorproject.org.
