Duane R. Smith, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 88. Born in 1935 in Topeka, Kansas, Duane's life was marked by a profound dedication to his family, his country and his community.
After a distinguished 20-year career in the Navy, Duane continued his service to the nation as an engineer in the nuclear power industry for 25 years. His brilliance in the field of electrical engineering was evident early on as he pursued his studies at the University of Kansas, graduating with honors, and later when he obtained an MBA from the University of Washington. Duane's commitment to excellence in his professional life was equally matched by his dedication to his family and community.
Married for 62 years, Duane is survived by his loving wife, Lois Smith, with whom he shared a beautiful and enduring love story. Together, they raised four children: Kenneth Smith, Shawn Martin, Charles Smith and Susan Leavitt. Duane was a proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, who will carry on his legacy of kindness, curiosity and the joy of discovery.
An active member of the Knights of Columbus, he served as Grand Knight in Burlington, Kansas, and as District Deputy, roles in which he exemplified leadership and compassion. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was very active in the church, embodying the Christian values of service and community.
Duane's interests were as vast as his talents. A man who loved working with his hands, he was as comfortable with wielding or turning a wrench as he was analyzing complex engineering problems. His hobbies included woodworking and auto mechanics. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, whether it was in the workshop, at church or simply gathered around the dinner table.
Words that best describe Duane are loving, intelligent, and handy. He approached every challenge with a sharp mind and a warm heart. His ability to fix anything that was broken extended beyond the physical; he was a source of strength and comfort to anyone in need.
His life was a testament to the power of hard work, the importance of faith and the enduring strength of family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched with his love, wisdom and generosity.
Duane's family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers and medical staff who provided support and comfort during this difficult time. Their kindness and compassion will always be remembered.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Duane was a beacon of light in the lives of many, and his memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those he loved. Rest in peace, Duane, and thank you for your love, the life lessons and the memories that we will always cherish.
