He was born on December 28, 1931, in Emmitsburg, Maryland to the late Earl R. and Lillie M. Herring.
After graduating from Gettysburg High School, Earl enlisted in the United States Air Force and served tours of duty in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. A 1968 Olympian, he was awarded numerous military citations including the Bronze Star. He retired from the USAF after 26 years of service with the rank of CMSgt.
Earl was preceded in death by Florence, his loving wife of 52 years, his sister Mary, and granddaughter A. Michelle. Earl is survived by his brother Francis and sister Dorothy; daughters Frances and Cynthia, and son Earl; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He will be interred at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery after a private ceremony.
