Eddie Taylor was born January 31, 1934 to Luther and Carrie Taylor in Wharton, Texas. “Chief Taylor” spent his youth with his older twin brother Edward; they were known as “Booster” and “Buster” to those that knew them well! During his youth, Eddie loved spending time working on the family farm while excelling in his academic pursuits. At the same time, he excelled in several sports including football and track, but baseball was his true calling. He continued to pursue baseball even while in the Air Force (AF) many years later. Eddie excelled at academics and graduated from Sorrell High School. He delayed college to immediately fulfill his need to serve his country. That led him to enlist in the U.S. Air Force.
After enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in October 1954, one of his first Air Force assignments included Sewart Air Force Base in Smyrna, Tennessee. This is where he met the love of his life, Sarah Ann Cannon; they married on her 19th birthday, May 12, 1960 and enjoyed over 63 years together and raised four sons: Eddie Lawrence, Michael Maurice, twins Roland and Ronald, and a daughter, Regina Faye.
Chief Taylor had a long and prestigious 30-year Air Force Career which included assignments in Smyrna, Tennessee; Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio; Langley AFB, Virginia; Incirlik Air Base, Turkey; Offutt AFB, Nebraska; and culminating at Lackland AFB, Texas where he retired in October 1984. All his sons followed his lead and served the Air Force as well. Eddie, retired AF Senior Master Sergeant; Michael, retired AF Master Sergeant; Ronald, retired AF Master Sergeant, and Roland, retired AF GS-14 civilian employee. Chief Taylor’s career included several prestigious awards to include the Meritorious Service Medal on 3 separate occasions. This is evidence that Chief Taylor distinguished himself at all locations and took pride in the many lives he affected through his leadership and mentoring efforts.
Eddie attended several churches throughout San Antonio before finding his true spiritual home at Cornerstone Church where he was a member for well over 20 years. In addition, he served as a long-time usher until his health declined a bit in later years. Since his passion to serve did not diminish, he volunteered to be a greeter where his infectious smile welcomed countless partitioners every Sunday.
Eddie died from complications brought on by a long, hard-fought battle with Dementia and related issues on September 29, 2023, at the age of 89. He was surrounded by those who loved him. Eddie is survived by his wife, Sarah Ann; his children, Eddie, Michael, Roland, Ronald, and Regina; grandchildren, Loren, Michael Jr, Brittney, Ashley, Brandon, Ciera, Joshua, Ronald Jr, Eddie II, and Autumn Faith; and many great grandchildren.
Chief Taylor was proceeded in death by both parents, Luther and Carrie Norman-Taylor; sisters, Clara Brooks and Lula Stewart; and brothers, Luther Taylor Jr, Elmo Taylor, James Taylor, and his older twin brother Edward “Booster” Taylor.
If you wish, donations may be made to Cornerstone Church in honor of Usher/Greeter Eddie Taylor.
Eddie’s family has requested a small intimate graveside service which will include only immediate family members. For those that are not local, the service will be “live streamed” to allow family/friends to view the ceremony which will feature full military honors. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, 10:00 am, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
