Edelmira was born on August 23, 1935 in Matanzas, Cuba, daughter of Estrella Santos and Andres Perez. Edelmira grew up as the only child who dedicated her upbringing to education, family and friends. She attended the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de Matanzas and earned a Bachelor of Science in 1956, and title of Land Surveyor and Appraiser in 1957.
She left her homeland in 1971, with her husband Felix Noel Padrón, two children, Maria and Felix, and her mother seeking freedom and opportunity in United States. Settling in Yonkers, New York, she worked odd jobs while attending school to learn English and preserving family commitments. Edelmira and her husband Felix retired to Hollywood, Florida in 1993, after fifteen years working as a health aid in a nursing home in Yonkers.
Mirita, as she was referred to by her family and friends, spent her life as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mirita spent much of her time documenting the family history, upholding her home and attending to her garden. She also loved listening to comedian Álvarez Guedes’ jokes, watching Andy Garcia movies and the Yankees baseball games.
Mirita adored her husband of 51 years and cared for him until his passing in 2001. She moved to San Antonio, Texas in 2020 and is survived by her son, Felix N Padrón Jr; daughter, Maria L Azevedo; and their spouses Ana Lisa Padrón and Tony Azevedo, and five grandchildren; Chelsea E. Padrón, Isabel M. Padrón, Felicia E. Padrón, Jason and Cristina Azevedo.
Edelmira Magali Padrón will be reunited with her husband, and laid to rest, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson in New York.
