Edna “Nina” de la Garza was born on November 21, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas to Rufino Vargas Orea and Alice Zamora Vargas. She lived briefly in Mexico City, Garden Grove, California, Chicago, Illinois, eventually returning to live in San Antonio. Here she met and wed Jose A. de la Garza on February 1, 1969. During their 53 years of marriage, they had three children, Steve (April), Jonathan, and Beth (Zach) Lockwood. Five grandchildren followed, Adam de la Garza, Madison (Ryan) Lopez, Alec de la Garza, Reid Lockwood, and Pierce Lockwood. Recently the family welcomed two great grandchildren, Tripp de la Garza and Stella Lopez.
Nina worked for several San Antonio companies during her life, including USAA and Mary Kay. She retired but remained active with her family and in her community.
Diagnosed with Cancer in March, she sought treatment at MD Anderson in Houston and San Antonio. She was an amazing patient and fought her battle with courage. She received the absolute best care, but ultimately it was determined to be terminal. Upon learning this Nina sought strength in her lifelong spiritual love of God and faith in the Catholic Church. God graciously gave her the peace of mind, strength, and spirit to accept his will.
With dignity deserving of the wonderful lady that she was in life, she gracefully passed on November 4, 2022, in the company of her beloved husband.
Nina was preceded in death by her parents, Rufino Vargas Orea and Alice Zamora Vargas; grandparents, Eusebio Zamora and Edna Elizabeth Chipps; brother, Roger Vargas and his wife Mary Helen Vargas; sister-in-law, Diane Vargas; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Nina was devoted to her family. She led by example and cared for us all with unconditional love and kindness. We will carry on her legacy of love forever.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, November 27, 2022, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
