

Edwin Henry May, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather entered into eternal rest on November 9, 2010 at the age of 94. He was born on October 28, 1916 in Oberlin, KS to Henry and Katie May. He was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Doris A. May (Rilling) and his wife of six years, Mildred A. May (Taylor).
He is survived by his three children and their families: son Edwin Henry May Jr. wife Sandy, daughter Edna Katherine Gillespie, and daughter Robin Elaine Allen husband Larry. He had seven grandchildren: Matt Allen, Luke Allen, Jennifer May Burkhart, Jeffrey May, Jason Gillespie, Justin Gillespie, and Megan Gillespie. He had five great grandchildren: Teagan Allen, Mackenzie Allen, Rebeckah Burkhart, Blake Allen and Kolby Allen.
Edwin served in the U.S. Army, Co C 411th Infantry from January 1941 to September 1945. His service took him to Normandy and Central Europe. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.
Following WWII, Edwin and Doris started their family in San Antonio, where they attended St. John’s Lutheran Church for over 40 years. At St. John’s he served as an Assistant Scout Master and coached several of his children’s baseball teams. Edwin worked at the Alamo Iron Works for over 32 years as a machinist retiring in 1982. Following his retirement he worked numerous years with various church volunteer organizations. In his retirement he loved to travel and visit with his children and grandchildren. The past four years he has lived at The Laurels Assisted Living Facility.
Visitation will be 5-7p.m., Friday, November 12, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be 9a.m., Saturday, November 13, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
