

He was born on June 25, 1920 and raised in Davenport, Iowa; received a B.A. from St. Ambrose University; attended the University of Iowa College of Law 1941-42; served 4 years in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and became a qualified submarine officer.
He returned to law school, received a J.D. in September of 1947, and was an associate with a law firm for 3 years in Davenport.
In October 1950, he returned to active military duty in The Judge Advocate General Corps, U.S. Army, and served until retiring in October 1970 as a Colonel.
Early assignments principally concerned felony trials. Later assignments were to the faculty at the U.S. Military Academy., West Point, and as a director of Academics of T.J.A.G.S., Charlottesville, VA.
After retirement, he became a tenured faculty member of the law schools at The University of Tulsa and St. Mary's University. He retired in 1990.
He was a member of the State Bar of Texas and the San Antonio Bar Association. He was a past president of the Business Men's Dinner Club, a member of The Petroleum Club and The Oak Hills Country Club.
COL Schmidt is survived by his wife, Sybil Ann; daughter, Shelly and her husband, R.C. Bates III of Dallas.
