Born on March 12, 1933, in Lockhart, Texas, her early years were filled with laughter, family, and joy that radiated from a heart full of possibilities. As she grew, Elida's quest for knowledge led her on the path of education. First, as a student. And then, as a teacher.
Elida retired from a successful career in cosmetology. Working diligently as a single mother to provide for her young children, she owned her own beauty salon in San Antonio, Texas. She then enjoyed 11 years at San Marcos High School (1977-1988) in San Marcos, Texas, where – under her guidance and instruction – she saw her students, including her granddaughter Laura, take home many first-place trophies from VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America — now SkillsUSA). She has, indeed, touched the lives of her students, many of whom have gone on to have lifelong careers in the field of beauty.
She loved art and travel which she enjoyed with the love of her life, Merrill Holt. Their travels took them across the globe from the outback of Australia to the canals of Venice, Italy.
Elida was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is preceded in death by her husband, Merrill; daughter, Yolanda; and two siblings, Alice and Eddie. She is survived by her son, Lani Rumion; daughters, Leticia (Greg) Morton and Maile (Scott) Walker; granddaughters, Laura Fowler, Lee (Tom) Rice, and Lanell Rumion; grandson, Jonathan (Jamie) Rumion; great grandchildren, Monica Walker, Reagan (Nick) Montes, Leslie Brandt, Adam Walker, and Iris Walker; sister, Lydia Rodriguez; brother, Gilbert Zapata (Gloria); and countless loved ones.
A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Holy Cross Cemetery, 17501 Nacogdoches Rd, San Antonio, TX 78266. A Celebration of Life for invited guests will follow with details to come.
