Emily Thompson Grooms, known often as “Emmy”, died Saturday, January 17, 2026, leaving behind a beloved son, Matthew W. Grooms; brother, Dr. Daniel J. Thompson and wife, Elizabeth Callaway; a small extended family including niece, Kimberly Renner and nephew, Cole Thompson of Austin, TX, and nephews, Ralph Hall of Sugarland, TX, & Tracy Hall of Denton, N.C. She joins her husband, J. Wm. (Bill) Grooms and daughter, Melissa Grooms Sullivan, who pre-deceased her in 2005 and 2006.
After being born November 27, 1929, in Henderson, TX, she resided with her family in Hearne and Houston. Moving to San Antonio in 1948, she then attended Trinity University and the University of Texas in Austin where she met her husband of 54 years. Following marriage in 1951, her life was centered on her family and friends including those at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church where she had been a member since 1955. Her remains will be cremated.
A memorial service will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 6, 2026, at St. Andrew's Church and school, located at 722 Robinhood Pl. A reception will follow immediately after.
The family suggests that any memorials might be directed to St. Andrew’s Church at 722 Robinhood Pl, San Antonio, TX 78209, or to charities of choice, caring for the hungry and homeless.
