Enrique L. Vasquez, former Armadillo King and owner of Vasquez Restaurant, Recommended by Enrique, passed away on Oct. 9, 2018, at the age of 85. Enrique was born to Jesus and Margarita Vasquez on July 23, 1933, in Uvalde, Texas. He was a brutally honest man with strong convictions, a steadfast work ethic, a compassionate heart and a healthy sense of humor.
At 19 years of age he enlisted in the Army and was ranked in the top 10 at the NCO academy, eventually becoming a sergeant major and serving honorably in the Korean Conflict. Enrique led a vibrant life after the military. He loved chili cook-offs in Terlingua, where he took on the persona of the Armadillo King. His fame as the Armadillo King landed him an appearance on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson. On a more serious level, his political grass-roots efforts and community organizing led to an invitation from the Manhattan borough’s president, Percy Sutton, to speak at Columbia University in New York. It was one of his proudest moments.
Enrique was best known for operating Vasquez Restaurant, singing and playing guitar while serving the best food in town, with enchiladas second to none. He was often seen driving around Uvalde in his cherished, beat up, white 1963 Chevy pickup.
Enrique touched so many lives in so many ways. He provided for his family and was a mentor and friend to his patrons. He was always there to help others and lend a hand to those in need. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his 14 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his children.
