February 18, 2021  Erin was born on February 25, 1975 at the Nix hospital downtown, Kathi’s room and I guess maternity ward was on the 22nd floor. Through the closed windows, we could still hear ‘Bongo Joe’ down below on the street as he whistled out his music and tunes. Then at 1:09 P.M., Erin came into this world and as Aunt Nanie and I watched Erin through the nursery window around 3:00 P.M., Erin would have none of it, she was ready to go and proceeded to get on all fours in crawling position, she rocked back and forth and finally fell back on the mattress.   My baby girl;  Erin Dooley joined her mother and other family members in paradise, a week shy of her 46th birthday. She passed at 5:45 pm. However, she was gone before the EMS got there, even though the EMTS worked for 45 minutes. I was on the phone the whole time listening to the beeps and that familiar flatline tone. She is no longer in pain or suffering. There are no words to express the pain I’m feeling. I remember her probably 18 months old helping me bbq holding the tongs on our carport at Kate Schenck. 10 months old flying with us to Panama to meet her “Lolly” and grandpa. The memories are flooding through the halls of my heart. 31 years ago, she was diagnosed with lupus, the invisible lifelong disease. She was ‘supposed’ to die 24 years ago, but through the power of prayer, she became a miracle and her cardiologist received religion. Her daughter was aptly named Trinity, another miracle. Erin was a caregiver for all who came within her radar, taking in the strays and marginalized, buoying them up, ignoring her own suffering.  Eternal rest grant unto my baby girl Erin, O Lord. And may your eternal light shine upon her. May she now rest in your peace in eternal paradise. She has really been missing her mama the last couple of months. Now she is with her. God help us she left behind, especially Trinity. Pray for us.  Erin was an avid gardener, who loved to be outside in the yard, following her mother and grandfather, even with her physical limitations.  She was direct in her spiritual guidance to her friends, family and those who came seeking help.  Erin was a light, ignoring her own sufferings and pain to administer love, care and support to the depressed, the marginalized, and lost; who witnessed to her strength of faith. They became friends and it seemed disciples, as they always asked for her guidance and approval; hence her other nickname; Sugar-free. No sugar coating.  The day that Erin left this life started unlike any other day in San Antonio; snowing and snowed throughout the day. A beautiful, lazy snow, no wind, big lazy flakes going nowhere in a hurry, a peaceful day, no noise – there was no traffic, it was the peaceful kind of day that mesmerizes you.  Exactly one month after Erin was born, we were living in a 2nd floor, 2 bedroom apartment at Utopia Apartments (Southsiiiide!), oddly enough where Utopia street t-boned Goliad road. That day was preceded by a vicious spring time storm which blew out the sliding portion/pane of the window in Erin’s room. Kathi and I were in the living room and Erin had been put to bed for the evening. We heard the noise, plus our baby Erin was screaming. The window landed squarely across the top of Erin’s crib without breaking or falling in on her and snow was coming into the bedroom where the window had been. It seems Our Lady of Snows has been with our family from the beginning. Erin’s mission was not done yet and none of us know what or who that mission was/is; only God does and He called her home from her embattled body, her mission complete on February 18; my dad’s birthday, the 11th anniversary of her beloved “Lollie” s (whom Erin named as first grandchild) death. More coincidences (there are none), my mother passed when she was 45 and her mother, my grandmother died when she was 45 (before I was born). It is no wonder that my mother’s younger sister, my aunt was so afraid of approaching that age.  Erin was fiercely protective of her family, even when she lived at home. Whenever a female work colleague or school classmate would call the house (we only had landlines back then) and ask for me, first thing Erin would ask the female caller; “You know he’s married, right?”. Like a mama bear, Erin protected her house and her family in it. Erin knew she did not have much time, so did not mince words, she spoke direct without beating around the bush. That’s why her friends and those she took under her wings called her ‘Sugar-free’.

Erin (Dools) was my best friend and always will be in my heart. She was always by my side whether in physical or spiritual. Anytime I needed a good laugh, I would just call on her. She will be deeply missed, but knowing she is with some of her family up there watching out for everyone that she had in her circle. God love you my friend and I will always love you and miss you.

Erin you will always be that little curly hair baby girl that I babysat when you lived on Kate Schenck. It’s so hard to believe your gone. I’m happy your with your mom and uncle Chuck. I’m truly blessed to have been a small part of your life. Rest In Peace baby girl.
