Esther Margaret Hofmann Wright, affectionately known as Margie, was born on March 10, 1931, in the heart of San Antonio, Texas, to her adoring parents, George Harold Hofmann and Esther Margaret (Popp) Hofmann. She peacefully departed this world on August 20, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.
Margie's life was a symphony of service, composed with love, dedication, and unwavering commitment. As a devoted wife to 1st Lieutenant Burl Merrick Wright, USMC, she stood by his side throughout his military career, demonstrating strength and resilience that inspired all who knew her.
In 1953, Margie earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Incarnate Word, marking the commencement of a lifelong professional journey dedicated to the well-being of others. Her career path as a compassionate Registered Nurse spanned various specialties, including private nursing, surgical care, labor and delivery, and tending to newborns. With her family, she crisscrossed the country, working from Camp Lejeune to Camp Pendleton, San Antonio to San Diego, and from Houston to Honolulu to Santa Clara. In her final two decades as a Public Health Nurse, Margie provided vital pregnancy and prenatal care to underprivileged residents in San Antonio's public housing projects. Remarkably, she managed all of these commitments while raising her five children and following her Marine spouse to wherever duty called.
Even in retirement, Margie's heart continued to beat for service. Well into her 80s, she selflessly volunteered for the San Antonio Police Department as a Volunteer in Policing and Public Safety Team volunteer. Her roles were diverse, from answering phones for the homicide department to issuing Handicap Parking citations to violators, fingerprinting children for safety records, and assisting with fundraising events for families of fallen firefighters and law enforcement officers. Her dedication earned her the titles of Citizen Corps Volunteer of the Year in 2014 and Volunteers in Policing Service Member of the Year in the same year.
Margie's volunteer spirit extended to the arts, where she ushered at the Majestic and Aztec Theaters and Trinity's Laurie Auditorium. She was a cherished member of the San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society, the Shavano Park Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter, and the Naval Officers' Wives Club.
When driving was no longer an option, Margie continued to give back at her retirement center, calling Bingo and serving on the welcoming committee for the church. Her 15-year residence at the Air Force Village, later known as Blue Skies Over Texas, marked a vibrant chapter in her life.
During her transition from Blue Skies Over Texas to the Alphonse House at the Village of Incarnate Word, Margie was blessed to have her loving daughter, Gina, and her devoted husband, Pat, welcome her to their home in Austin. Their unwavering care and boundless love provided comfort and support as she transitioned to her final residence.
In her final months, Margie found solace at the Alphonse House at the Village at Incarnate Word, where she was lovingly cared for. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers at the Alphonse House and the Brook Army Medical Center, who provided solace and assistance during her final days.
Her journey in life was not without its sorrows, as she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, 1st LT Burl Merrick Wright, her eldest son, Dennis Gerard Wright, her brother, George Harold Hofmann, Jr., and her sisters, Claire Virginia Aselin, Anna (Nancy) Matilda Osborn, and Marilyn Joyce Fowlkes. Their memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved them.
She leaves behind a legacy of service that will forever inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by her cherished daughter, Regina Wright [Patrick] McKeever, and her devoted sons, Jonathan Edward [Debbie], Peter Damian [Catlynn], and Robert Christian [Michele] Wright. She is also survived by her dear sister, Patricia Jean McReynolds, who carries on her sister's memory with love.
Margie's light will continue to shine brightly through her 12 beloved grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she held close to her heart.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests to consider donations to some of Margie's favorite organizations, such as the University of the Incarnate Word, The 100 Club of San Antonio, The Public Theater of San Antonio, or any other charity that resonates with you, carrying forward Margie's spirit of generosity and love for others.
Margie's life was a testament to the power of service, love, and dedication to family and community. May her memory be a guiding light for us all. She rests in eternal peace, forever in our hearts.
