Dr. Esther Herrera y Cairo Zorrilla age 76, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on October 17, 1940, in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico to Othon and Rosario Herrera y Cairo. She was preceded in death by her parents and aunts. Esther is survived by her husband, Leopoldo Zorrilla; children, Aida Zorrilla, Monica Kosterlitzky and Miguel "Mike" Zorrilla and Alexia Marcoux Zorrilla; grandchildren, Emi Kosterlitzky, Gabriel Zorrilla and Tenzin Zorrilla.
Esther was passionate about education and broke barriers in her home country by graduating from medical school at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in Mexico City. Upon graduation in 1965, she married her fellow medical school sweetheart, Dr. Leopoldo Zorrilla Rios, and immigrated to San Antonio, Texas. Rather than practicing medicine, she chose to devote her life to creating a family to whom she dedicated all her love and energy while providing care and opportunities to others in need.
Esther met all life's challenges with grace, determination and integrity. Throughout the years she made sincere and deep connections with people from all walks of life and from diverse cultures and opened her home to them. She was known by her friends for her commitment to family, her love for family gatherings for which she would prepare and present magnificent meals that she would create with love. She loved mariachis; she loved to dance; she loved a game of "damas chinas"; and she loved to invite friends into her garden.
Having been raised from a very young age by her mother and aunts; her heart was never far from Culiacán or from the house in which she grew up. As her aunts were all educators, their commitment to education made a deep impression on her and she instilled this in her children and grandchildren. Upon her mother's passing, she renovated and donated her childhood home to establish Casa Achoy, a cultural and educational center dedicated to developing teachers and students.
While we will miss her deeply, we carry her love and selfless approach to life with us in our hearts forever.
Te queremos mucho Mamí, and we promise we will always support and love one another, and as you always say, we promise to "Enjoy it!!!"
