Gene was raised in Alma, Michigan and was a graduate of Alma College, with a degree in math and business administration, this is also where he met and married Ruth Anna Redman on December 19, 1948. After four years of marriage, and three children later, they left Alma, Michigan to start a sales lot for the family business, selling New Moon Trailers in San Antonio, Texas. He realized after a few years that sales were not for him. He then purchased a mobile home park, Trailer Haven, in 1959 which he owned and operated until 1981. Many of the residents became his extended family.
Gene was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist church and served on numerous committees. He was the unofficial groundskeeper for many years, frequently bringing along his grandchildren to assist him. He took great pride in his service to the church.
Gene was an avid golfer and always returned home with a new joke. He loved fishing, traveling, good food and was a “ruthless” card player. He took great pleasure in donating to the San Antonio Zoo and was a patron of the arts. His greatest joy was his family and being affectionately known as “Pa” to just about everybody.
He was preceded in death by, his wife Ruth Anna Reed; mother, Marian Wyllys; son, Randall S. Reed; and grandson, Jonmichael Reed.
