September 30, 1937 - May 10, 2022
Evangeline T. Gutierrez ("Vangie"), 84, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, while resting at home, peacefully went to be with our Heavenly Father and her beloved husband of 54 years, Ruben Gutierrez on May 10, 2022.
Vangie was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 30, 1937, to Justo and Celestina (Flores) Travieso. She was an 8th generation descendent of Vicente Alvarez Travieso of the Canary Islands, Spain, one of the thirteen founders of the city of San Antonio, Texas.
Vangie was a graduate of Luther Burbank High School, Class of 1954. Vangie loved to dance, and it was at a dance, that she met her future husband, Ruben Gutierrez at Blanches dance hall. Ruben and Vangie were married on February 9, 1957 and spent the next 54 years together. As an Army wife, Vangie was kept busy raising their three boys: Miguel, Mario and Gilbert, often by herself, while her husband was deployed overseas or on Active duty. Vangie was great at football, baseball, fishing and camping, having grown up playing with her brother Justo. After Rubens retirement from the Army after a short 17 years in Daleville, Alabama, getting her boys started in life, and retirement from her work at the Army and Airforce Exchange, Vangie and Ruben returned home to San Antonio to be nearer their extended family.
Vangie loved spending time with her family and especially all her grandchildren. Her face would light up every time her grandkids were near. Gardening and cooking were her passions later in life. She made the best menudo and was always proud of her Thanksgiving feasts. I can taste the banana cream pie just thinking about those memories.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Justo and Celia Travieso, her sister Mary Garza (Ramon Garza) and her beloved husband, Ruben Gutierrez. Evangeline is survived by her children and their spouses: Miguel (Kristi Gilleo), Mario (Durquia Guillen) and Gilbert (Darlene Redcliff). Grandchildren Gabriela Maria Gutierrez (Mike Jackson) and Christina Evangeline Gutierrez (Nathaniel Lafley) and Cristn Ruben Gutierrez, Andrs Josue Gutierrez and Martn de Mario Gutierrez. She is survived by her brother Joseph Anthony Travieso (Elida).
