Evelyn Grace Rees Biegert passed away on June 30, 2023, in Round Rock, Texas, at the age of 97. Evelyn was born in San Antonio, Texas, on April 24, 1926, to Charles Bertram Rees and Dora Young Rees. Evelyn graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1943 and soon after was employed by Edgar Tobin Aerial Surveys for 24 ½ years. She was a charter member of Brackenridge’s Iota Zeta Chi Sorority and a member of Windcrest United Methodist Church. As a direct descendant of Lt. Thomas B. Rees, one of the defenders killed at Goliad in 1836, she was a proud member of the Alamo Mission Chapter of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Evelyn married Alfred “Al” Biegert, Jr., on St. Patrick’s Day 1951. They loved the outdoors, traveling, gardening, rooting for the San Antonio Spurs, and spending time at Lake LBJ. In 2010, Evelyn and Al moved to Austin to be closer to their son’s family.
Evelyn was a humble but creative spirit who turned even the most basic tasks into artistry. For example, she loved cooking and baking for family and friends. Using edible paints, she hand-painted sugar cookies into works of art on holidays, especially Christmas. At one point she owned more than 100 cookie cutters. She was also a talented and prolific seamstress, sewing custom clothing, Christmas stockings, and pillows for family and friends well into her 90s. She sewed on every single Scouting Merit Badge earned by her two grandsons on their long journeys towards becoming Eagle Scouts. The last public event she was able to attend before her health declined was her youngest grandson’s Eagle Court of Honor, where she was honored with the Grandmother’s Pin for her years of support.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 66 years, and her brother Charles Bertram “Bert” Rees, Jr. She is survived by her son, Larry Biegert (Melissa); grandsons Austin Biegert (Jenna) and Hunter Biegert; brother Arthur Rees (Joann); sister-in-law Charlene Rees; nieces Lori Rees, Chay Rees Runnels (Scott) and family, Chana Rees Garrett (Josh) and family; and nephew Richard Alan Rees (Dini).
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Concho Hearts Hospice who provided loving and attentive care for Evelyn during her final weeks. A service to celebrate Evelyn’s life will be held at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy., San Antonio, at 11 a.m. on July 13th. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Central Texas Breast Cancer Resource Center, bcrc.org; or to Windcrest United Methodist Church, windcrestumc.org.
