Evelyn grew up in Sumter and met her husband, Lawrence D. Garrison, while working at Shaw Air Force Base. They spent the next 35 years living and traveling throughout the United Sates and Europe, including France, England, and Norway. In her travels, she was able to see and experience a great variety of adventures, even meeting the Queen of Denmark and the King of Norway. Wherever their assignment took them, she was able to see and take advantage of the opportunities they brought and made each location a home for her family. Upon her husband’s retirement, Evelyn worked for the U.S. Civil Service in Columbus, Ohio. The couple retired to San Antonio in the late 1990s.
Evelyn will be remembered for her love of afternoon drives to get a senior Diet Coke, antiques, clocks, porcelain teacups, and especially, her bird collection. She brought love and laughter to her family and friends, and most of all, was a wonderful wife and mother. She will be greatly missed.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Caroline Tiihonen; and brother, Joseph B. Smith, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Major General Lawrence D.
