Born in La Grange, Texas, to the late Eldee and Sadie Hummel on November 5, 1944, Everett was a graduate of Irvin High School in El Paso, TX, and an Industrial Engineering graduate of St. Mary’s University. He had a long and distinguished career working for the United States Air Force at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah. He settled in Devine, TX, in 1974 and maintained his residence there for the rest of his life. A homesteader at heart, he worked tirelessly to establish a family farm and ranch and construct his family’s home while simultaneously building a successful engineering career.
Everett was an avid hunter and fisherman, finding solace in the great outdoors. His passion led him across North America. Whether hunting moose or bears in Alaska, tracking elk in the Rockies, or fishing the Texas coast for reds with his lifelong friends Henry Gutierrez and the late Frank Davis, he embraced every adventure.
Over his lifetime, he restored multiple classic cars and was a proud member of the Push Rods Car Club. He had a passion for scavenging for the missing parts at car shows and junkyards to complete his projects. He was proud of his participation with his club at charity events, driving his ‘32 Ford Roadster.
Everett loved hosting, bringing together family and friends for a barbecue or fish fry. He was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed visits from his children and grandchildren, regularly saddling up his horses for the kids to ride. He had a love for country dancing and would happily take the hand of anyone willing to join him for a two-step or waltz. Everett served as a member and officer of the Quihi Gun Club, and he was a regular at the dance hall.
Everett’s legacy will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he has left us, his spirit will live on in the memories of the adventures he embarked upon, the cars he built, the dances he shared, and the love he gave.
Rest in peace, Everett. Your life was a testament to living fully and joyfully. You will be deeply missed by your family, friends, and all who knew you.
Everett is survived by his wife, Laura; children, Molly (Justin), Lacy (Edwin), and Jed (Rachel); stepdaughter, Jessica; grandchildren, Mabry, Zachery, Quinton, Emery, Arden, Thomas, Reid, Helena, and Clark.
