She was preceded in death by husbands, Victor Kallison and Al Lazarus, and by brothers, William Reisfeld and Harold Reisfeld.
She immigrated to the United States with her Mother, Dora in 1920. They left Ellis Island for San Antonio and were met there by her father, David. She went to public school and in 1928 graduated from Old Main Avenue High School. She attended a business college after graduation on a one year scholarship and began working in offices of stores while attending night classes at St. Mary's University's former downtown campus. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B. A. degree and later earned a master's degree from St. Mary's.
She taught in the San Antonio Independent School District for 35 years, with 31 of those years spent at J. T. Brackenridge Elementary School. There she felt she could make more of a difference by helping children enjoy school and making learning fun rather than transferring to a more affluent school.
She taught Sunday school at Temple Beth-El for several years and for 25 years at Agudas Achim Synagogue. She also coached immigrants in learning to speak English.
She is survived by two daughters, Eleanor Sprowl, Diane Kaufman and husband, Burt; a son, Jack Kallison; a step-daughter, Jan Rosenberg and husband, Steve. Also six grandchildren, Dean Sprowl and wife, Angela; Heather Bank and husband, Daniel; Scott Kaufman, Kathryn Kallison, Kenny and Laura Rosenberg, and two great grandchildren, Payson and Riley Sprowl.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Manor Care Briaridge for their compassionate care of and concern for our mother.
