Fay H. Martin, Jr, age 96, passed from this life on July 28, 2016 in San Antonio. Fay Jr. was born in Houston, Texas April 21, 1920 to Fay H. Martin, Sr. and Annamae Beatrice Robinette but lived most of his life in San Antonio attending Texas A&M University, Trinity University, and Southwest Texas State College. He served in the Army during World War II at the end of the Philippine campaign under MacArthur extending into the occupation of Japan. He served later in the Reserves and Texas National Guard retiring as a Colonel in 1980.
After receiving his Masters Degree, he was an educator and coach for many years. From 1954 to 1963 he coached in Somerset, Texas and is fondly remembered by many of his students who considered him a mentor. Besides being one of the winningest football coaches in Somerset history, many will remember his involvement in the Texas Olympics which was a big event in the area each year. He had a knack for knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each of his players and figuring out how to use them and encourage them to be their best.
Fay Jr. was always active in church activities wherever he attended and for some years was heavily involved in the Civitan organization honorably holding several offices and successfully organizing events for the club. Wherever he went in town he would meet people he knew and could speak to them by name and tell anyone with him how they were acquainted and what they had been involved in together. His family sometimes believed he knew everyone in town no matter how much San Antonio grew.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna, in 1979 and his son John David in 2011. He is survived by his wife Shirley Woltering Martin, Fay H. Martin III "Buddy", and wife Irmadean, Gary Richard "Rick" Martin, Sandra Lucile and husband Ottar Rohrstaff, and daughter-in-law Kathy Martin. Then there are the 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, the spouses and loved step family. After 37 years with the mother of his children it would be hard to find another love, but he did and was blessed by Shirley and her children with their growing families for almost 31 more years.
