

A lifelong resident of San Antonio, Fernando was born on July 15, 1939, to Antonio Lopez and Concepcion Olivares. Fernando graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1958 and attended St. Mary’s University before serving in the Army from 1961 to 1964 and the Army Reserve until 1967.
Fernando was married to Maria del Rosario on November 9th, 1968. Their love and fifty-five-year commitment to each other served as an inspiration to all who knew them.
Fernando worked in the restaurant industry for over 50 years. His warmth, hard work, dedication to service, and friendly smile made him a beloved fixture at the original Las Palapas on West Ave. and later at Callaghan.
He is survived by his loving wife, Maria del Rosario, his children, Clarisa, Albert and Fernando, his daughters-in-law, Jenni and Christine, grandchildren Joshua, Julianna, Oliver, Aerilynn, Henry, and Matthias, and his sisters, Socorro, and Sister Victoria Anne.
Fernando loved nothing more than being surrounded by his family and friends. He will always be remembered for his joyous laughter that filled up any room, his good nature and overwhelming love and generosity for all.
A family night visitation will be held to celebrate Fernando’s life on Wednesday, March 20, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218. A rosary will be said on Wednesday, March 20, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home.
A Catholic mass will be held Thursday, March 21, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 700 Dewhurst Rd, San Antonio, TX 78213. Military honors will occur Thursday, March 21, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 11:20 AM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
A reception will follow after Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 700 Dewhurst Rd, San Antonio, TX 78213 at 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM.
The family wishes to extend our sincerest thanks to Abode Home, where Fernando was lovingly cared for during his final days, and to Ron Acosta and the Hallelujah Foundation. In lieu of flowers, donations in Fernando’s memory to Abode Home or Hallelujah Foundation would be appreciated.
