Flavian E. Vollmer known as "Babe" by his family and friends, age 95, of San Antonio, died Friday, December 26, 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife Modelle Barker Vollmer; two brothers, Clarence and Ferdinand Vollmer, Jr.; and his older sister Dorothy Talerico. Flavian is survived by his younger sister, Evelyn Lacey of San Antonio; his sons, David of Taos, NM, and Donald of Austin, TX. Flavian is also survived by his grandchildren, Jeffrey, Travis, Lauren and Justin Vollmer; and one great-grandchild, Reagan.
Flavian was the son of Clara Wrase Vollmer and Ferdinand Joseph Vollmer, Sr., who founded and operated Vollmer Electric Company in San Antonio until his death in 1955. Flavian learned the trade by his father's side. He and his father also shared many experiences with one another while participating in outdoor activities like hunting.
Growing up on Saunders Ave in the Prospect Hill subdivision of San Antonio, he attended church and primary school in Sacred Heart Catholic Parish. He was the president of his senior class at Central Catholic High School, where he played varsity baseball and basketball and was cadet battalion major of the R.O.T.C. He has an amiable personality and was on San Antonio's list of Who's Who in his senior year of high school.
He was married to Modelle Ingram Barker of San Antonio on February 14, 1941, and they remained married for 62 years until her death on September 26, 2003.
Other notable events in his life were his service on the United States Army from October 1944 until August 1946 when he served on the European Front and in the Army of Occupation. He returned home after his Honorable Discharge and resumed his career at Kelly Air Force Base, where he supervised airplane repair. He retired from Kelly AFB after more than 40 years.
Throughout these years, while raising their sons, "Babe" and Modelle participated in many of their sons school activities; as well as their personal social pastimes including Sunday Supper Club and dance clubs such as Alamo Allemande, Knife and Fork, etc. They had several large groups of very close friends with whom they passed time playing cards and traveling.
They had very close bonds to their families. Flavian was a major influence on family through his teaching strong moral values.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Wednesday, January 7, 2015 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough.
