Florisa Luna Galindo joined her beloved husband Dan and our heavenly Father on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012. With 32 members of her family by her bedside, she lost her courageous battle and succumbed from heart surgery complications.
Florisa was born May 4, 1921, in Laredo, Texas to Jose and Guadalupe Luna. The eldest of eight siblings, Florisa was raised by her maternal grandparents, Jose and Mariana Nieto. She considered her aunts, Luisa, Teresa, Victoria and Julia Nieto as sisters.
Florisa graduated from Laredo Martin High School and was accepted to the Physicians and Surgeons School of Nursing in San Antonio, where she earned her diploma as a registered nurse and was board licensed to practice in Texas.
On Dec. 3, 1944, she married the love of her life, Dan Galindo, Jr., Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Coast Guard. They were married at San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio and months later honeymooned in Boston.
In 1948, with their two young sons, Florisa moved into her home, completely built by her proud husband. Florisa and Dan were blessed with four more children. She resided there until her death.
In 1967, she was first diagnosed with cancer. Throughout the next five decades she battled the disease, defying the odds and proving miracles do happen. Her devout faith in our Lord and in her family gave her constant strength.
She never allowed ill health to deter from her dedicated work with the children at St. Henry's Catholic Church. For 64 years, she devoted her life to her dearly loved parish.
She taught elementary school and religious education for many years. Florisa was a founding member and first president of the Infant Jesus of Prague Society, serving as its leader intermittently for more than 50 years.
She had the society registered with The Vatican, and subsequently provided Catholic formation and sacramental preparation classes to countless parish children.
Florisa and Dan also made Catholic education a priority for their children. All six received Catholic education through high school, and all earned college degrees.
Florisa had great faith in her doctors. The family would like to thank Drs. William Bode, John Gonzalez, Gerald Koppes, James Vosberg and James Garrison. The family would like to express gratitude to Claudia Carreon for her care of Florisa in her final months. Florisa is survived by her two sisters, Estella Guajardo and Lilia Lopez of San Antonio. She is survived by her children, Daniel (Rebecca) Galindo of Austin, Robert (Elida) Galindo, Henry (Cheryl) Galindo, Judith Ann (George) Patterson, Richard Galindo, and William (Barbara) Galindo of San Antonio. Florisa leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Poring Loring on McCullough.
