With heavy hearts, we announce the death of the incomparable Frances Notzon Kuntz, who died peacefully in her sleep on July 7, 2024. She left an indelible impression on family, friends, students, and anyone else she met during her 86 years.
Born in Laredo, Texas, on July 30, 1937, she was the daughter of Aloys J. Notzon, Jr. and Hortense Leyendecker. She was a sixth-generation Texan and direct descendant of Don Tomás Sánchez de la Barrera, founder of Laredo – a fact of which she was very proud. She attended Laredo’s Ursuline Academy and then graduated from Incarnate Word College in 1958 with a degree in education.
She spent most of her thirty-seven-year career teaching in the poorest areas of Laredo and San Antonio. She was passionate about teaching and helping all of “her” kids inside and outside of her classroom. She retired in 2006 from J.T. Brackenridge Elementary School.
A devout Catholic, Frances was a parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Churches for many years. She was a former member of St. Monica’s Guild, the Junior League of San Antonio, and The Assembly Club.
Known for her beauty, brains, wit, charm, and faith, Frances was also known for being a long-suffering hypochondriac (to the annoyance of her children and doctor). Much to her chagrin, the test results never came back positive for the various plagues and illnesses from which she claimed to suffer.
Frances is survived by her two children, Rosebud Kuntz Coffey and John Kuntz, her two brothers Aloys J. Notzon, III, (Angela) and Martin A. Notzon (Beth), and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Marcel C. Notzon, II, her sister-in-law Nora Lee Notzon, and her sister Alice Notzon.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers and staff members at Franklin Park-Alamo Heights who were so kind to Frances. She enjoyed many happy years because of them; we are forever grateful for their care.
Services will be held at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 223 E. Summit Avenue, San Antonio, Texas, on Wednesday, July 17th. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m., followed by the Rosary and funeral Mass at 3:00 p.m. A private burial will be conducted at a later date.
