Francisco "Frank" Landin Jr., beloved husband, father, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2024. Surrounded by the warmth and love of his family and friends after suffering a tragic brain bleed, Frank's final moments reflected the deep connections he nurtured throughout his life. Born on October 9, 1964, at Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan, Frank grew up in Austin, Texas. His journey from humble beginnings to a cherished family man and respected professional stands as a testament to his strength, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
Frank’s infectious humor and boundless energy brightened the lives of everyone around him. Renowned for his love of dad jokes and funny memes, he had an extraordinary gift for making people smile and laugh, regardless of the circumstance. His insatiable curiosity and vast expertise in a myriad of subjects made him a fountain of knowledge, always eager to share his passions and insights. Many of us were schooled by him on the latest tech, the nuances of brewing coffee, movies, cars, grilling, dancing, pop culture, and so much more. Frank could fix anything and earned the affectionate nickname “MacGyver” for his remarkable problem-solving skills.
Frank’s early life was marked by hardship. His father exited his life at an early age, leaving his mother, whom he adored, to work tirelessly to support five children. Frank began working at the age of 14 to help his family make ends meet. He was particularly proud of his time at the Broken Spoke in Austin, where Mr. James White kindly hired him to do everything from bussing tables to cooking. It was here that Frank learned how to dance and to make their famous chicken fried steak, a secret recipe he unfortunately took with him. It was also at this iconic honky-tonk that Frank developed a love of classic country music, meeting greats like Willie Nelson and George Strait there. Frank’s perseverance and dedication eventually led him to a successful career as a system administrator. At the time of his death, he was a System Administrator at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, serving with distinction as a civilian. His commitment to his work and his colleagues was matched only by his deep devotion to his family.
Frank’s heart and soul were anchored in his family. He was a loyal husband to his wife of 25 years, Poonam Sharma. Despite their different backgrounds, they shared a common vision for their life together and achieved it with grace and love. Frank was a devoted father, incredibly proud of his children, Lina Landin, Sonya Landin, Robyn Babyak, and James Babyak. To his siblings, Angela Schrieber, David Schrieber, Esperanza Landin, and Linda Landin, he was lovingly known as “Frankie.” He absolutely adored his godparents, Rosemary and Robert Ortiz. Frank was also deeply loved by his in-laws; his mother-in-law, Bimla Sharma, affectionately called him her “Sunshine.” He was a jovial uncle to numerous nieces and nephews and cherished his cousins and large extended family on both sides. Frank was worshiped by his beloved dog, Spirit. Frank’s memory is held dear by countless friends and colleagues who were fortunate to know him.
Frank embraced people from all walks of life, fostering an inclusive spirit that welcomed and celebrated the diversity in everyone he met.
Frank was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Rocha, his father, Francisco Landin, his brother, David Schrieber, and his nephews, Christopher Schrieber and Joshua Landin.
We are profoundly grateful for the time we had with Frank. His memory will live on in the stories we share, the love he gave so freely, and the laughter that brightened our darkest times. Though we will deeply miss his generous spirit and sense of humor, we find solace in knowing that his journey continues in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Rest in peace, Francisco "Frank" Landin Jr. Your memory will forever be a source of strength and comfort in our lives.
