Franklin Dwight Jones was born August 15, 1934, in Rock Springs Wyoming to Dwight James Jones and Dorotha Dygert Jones. Franklin graduated from Rock Springs High School in 1953 and served in the United States Air Force as a Survival Instructor. He reconnected with his High School sweetheart, Elinor Belcher and they were married on April 21, 1960.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Franklin and Elinor moved to Reno, Nevada where Franklin began his career as a draftsman and designer and Elinor cared for their growing family. In 1964, the family relocated to Rock Springs where they lived for a short time. They then moved to Lander, WY, Laramie, WY and Denver, CO. They then relocated to Albuquerque, NM in 1967 where he became a construction inspector for Michael Baker Inspection Services.
The family moved with the job, mostly on temporary stints. They finally settled in Las Lunas, NM where Franklin joined CDK Contracting. Since CDK was based in San Antonio, the family made their final move to San Antonio in November 1971.
Both Franklin and Elinor were lifelong Episcopalians, and they joined Resurrection Episcopal church, where Franklin became a member of the vestry, and later Junior Warden. He repeated the Junior Warden position at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
Franklin retired from the workforce in the late 80’s and stayed retired for about 6 weeks. He then went to work for Contemporary Constructors, a firm specializing in communication tower inspections. He retired for good when his beloved wife, Elinor needed full time nursing for dementia. Elinor passed away in October 2007 and he married his current wife Veronica in April 2017.
Family was paramount for Franklin, and he remained extremely close to his extended family until his death. The family reunited approximately every two years and it was always a happy, joyful time for him. In addition, Franklin enjoyed playing cards, loving his dogs, his children and later, his grandchildren. He is best remembered for doing funny dances in his baby blue leisure suit, saying yabba dabba do from time to time and telling the grandchildren yuck pooey when they reached for his cigarettes. He was an avid reader and got his private pilot’s license in the early 1970’s.
He was also a huge Dallas Cowboys fan. His children believe that God was tired of watching his team by himself and called Franklin to join him as he watched through the open roof of AT&T Stadium. Valerie believes it was an attempt on Franklin’s part to avoid paying her the money that he owed her for betting on football games for close to 20 years. He always took the Cowboys, regardless. Val is thinking he owed her close to $1000. He always thought he won the bets, so she may actually owe him as he saw it. It doesn’t matter, neither of them ever paid up.
The Lord called him home in the wee hours of June 2, 2023. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elinor, his parents, Dwight and Dorotha Jones, sisters Marilyn Freburg and Lila Boles, nephew Patrick Blakely, Sisters-in Law Marsha Jones and Pamela Jones and Brothers-in-law Ken Freburg, Les Blakely and John Boles. He is survived by his Wife Veronica, brothers Roger Jones and Richard Jones, children Valerie Reynolds and husband James (Jim), Bella Jones Scanland, Katherine Jones Carlson and husband Robb. He is also survived by grandchildren Cara, Wesley, Garrett, Kayleigh, Jordan, Mitchell, Kira and Kennedy as well as 3 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
