Patsy, I was so saddened to see Clay's obituary.  I worked for Alamo Kiwanis Club for 10+ years and interacted with Clay at the annual Western Art Show. Patsy and Clay met at my parents house. Patsy “Tia” and my mother went to Trinity University together. I don’t have a memory that doesn’t include them. Clay inspired me to love art and the guitar. I have one regret. Clay and I talked about getting together two months ago combining our two classical guitars together to serenade Tia. Life took over and I thought I had time. I pray that Clay’s guitar comes to Tia in her dreams. He played by ear and could replicate any tune by playing with his hands at will when I was young. His hands gave gifts to so many people over the last 60+ years. Most know him for his painting and expressive speech as he also spoke with his hands. My father claimed that Clay and my mother were both from lost tribes of Israel as they “spoke with their hands”. For many years he played classical guitar during communion while we all walked through and took the sacraments. We grew up accepting his agnostic stance. He inspired me to study art though I ended up embracing contemporary art; I’ve always loved working in water color and ink for the children I tended. I went into nursing and child development yet still greatly appreciate and embrace what he inspired in me. I was born on Ground Hog Day. Tia and Clay always came for my Birthday dinners. When I was 9 I asked him “Clay what does a Ground hog look like?” He asked me to bring my sketch pad and a pencil. In seconds he whipped out a ground hog and signed it Groundhog McGaughy. My mother slipped it out weeks later and had it framed and I had my first “ McGaughy”. While he is known for his wild life and land scapes his nudes are stunning. I saw my first of his nudes in Tia and Clay’s house on Morse and Patterson before Amy was born. I now have several. My boys ask my why do the ladies have no clothes. I tell them “ I want you to know that women are beautiful”. Tia and Clay gave me one for my 60th birthday. My affection for them literally is rooted back 61 years. Clay influenced my life in music, art, acceptance, thought and commitment to those we love. If I could paint this it would be priceless. Clay I love you. Tia I am at the ready for you as you’ve always been for me. I can’t fill Clay’s space. I’ll do my best as your God Child.

I have loved the water colors by Clay for many years and have three large ones in my house that bring me much pleasure.  He was a fantastic artist.  I also always enjoyed his letters to the editor in the newspaper.  They were to the point and fun to read.  RIP George Gregory

Clay was always happy to break out his old guitar and make music with his friends in the St. David's Choir.  So many Cowboy Masses benefited from his participation over the years.  He will be sorely missed.

I was so sorry to see this obituary.   We go back a long way, first met as attendants at the wedding of a mutual friend, then later at the Witte saw Clay and helped hang his  fine watercolors in so many exhibitions ... Texas Watercolor Society, Local Artists, especially.   I enjoyed seeing him at a Trinity reunion in more recent years and always liked his letters to the editors in the daily paper.   My most sincere sympathy to family and friends, and to Barbara and Elkin from old times too.  Blessings to all.
