Gary Gordon Greiner passed away quietly November 20, 2025. Gary was born October 2, 1962 at Chanute Air Force Base Hospital, Ratoul, IL to Russell Duane Greiner, Colonel USAF (Ret.) and Nathalie Ruth Rohler Greiner. Gary was diagnosed with Down syndrome during a time where life expectancy for individuals with Down syndrome did not extend to adulthood.
He was born to an Air Force family and moved with the family often in childhood including Illinois, Massachusetts, Virginia, Wiesbaden, Germany, California, and Texas. Nathalie and Russell retired in San Antonio, Texas in 1976. Gary was able to read, write, and take care of himself. Gary graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1982 and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout that same year, already beating the odds. Gary also hiked the Philmont Scout Ranch multiple times and worked at National Jamborees. Additionally, he was selected for the Vigil honor in the Order of Arrow and earned the Methodist God and Country award.
Gary worked as a courtesy clerk at Kroger’s, Albertsons and HEB for over 39 years, a job that he loved, retiring in 2021. He lived with his parents until they moved to an independent living facility and then was cared for by family and caregivers for 10 years in the family home. In 2020, he moved to the Marbridge Foundation. Until his transition to Marbridge, Gary remained active as an honorary member of Optimist International, and as a charter member of his local church Oak Meadow UMC where he served first as an aid in Sunday School for the younger children and later as a Communion server. Gary’s Eagle Scout project was to plant trees at Oak Meadow UMC to beautify the property, trees which are still growing strong and enjoyed to this day. He was a beloved member of the congregation. Gary enjoyed older movies, WWE wrestling and Aquaman. He loved vanilla ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, music, drumming, dogs, and dancing.
He was predeceased by his parents Nathalie and Russell Greiner. He is survived by his three siblings Donn and wife Robin Greiner of San Antonio, TX, Terry and wife Johnanna Greiner and Carol and husband David Luschen all of Durango, CO, as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandniece, grand nephews, and numerous cousins. He was well loved and well taken care of by his community and family who enjoyed his positive personality.
The family would like to thank the Marbridge Foundation for his care for the last five years. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to either Oak Meadow UMC (San Antonio, TX) or the Marbridge Foundation (Manchaca, TX).
There will be a committal service on Friday, January 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, located at 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Meadow United Methodist Church, located at 2740 Hunters Gm Dr St. San Antonio, Texas 78231.
