Gayle Brooks Whitehair, Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Friend passed away peacefully January 17, 2025 in San Antonio, TX at the age of 81. Born on September 18, 1943 to Velma Boles and Jesse R. Brooks of Huntsville, Alabama. Gayle attended Freed Hardeman College, followed by business school. In 1965 she married the love of her life Ray, celebrated 60 years on January 9th and had 3 children Cynthia, Russell, and Ryan.
Gayle was the heart and soul of our home and family. She raised her three children in a happy and loving home to be independent, strong and caring adults. She was always supportive and encouraging, always wise and kind. Her patience, understanding and the calming way she carried herself showed in her love and support for each one. Gayle took special joy in each child’s sports and had lots of fond memories of their school activities and athletics. Not to mention, Gayle was a very passionate and extraordinary sports fan. She could tell you anything you wanted to know about any sport down to the years they won championships and who played for what teams.
Nothing brought her greater joy then her 5 Grandchildren. She loved spoiling them all and was the fun Nana. With 4 Granddaughters there was plenty of hair and nail time. She was a great model for them. Gayle never knew what kind of hair style she’d come out with, but she was a great sport every time. In addition, she also loved to toss the ball with her Grandson Owen.
Gayle’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Her laughter, her love of life, and her ability to make everyone feel cherished will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Doyce, Joyce, and brother Aubrey. She is survived by daughter Cynthia (Joel) Adams, Russell Whitehair, Ryan (Shannon) Whitehair; Granddaughters Amber Hills, Mckenzie and Ryleigh Whitehair, Raelynne Whitehair, Grandson Owen Adams, Brother J.R. (Kakki) Brooks and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held for family and friends Saturday, January 25, 2025 beginning at 5:00 pm at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas followed by a funeral service at 6:00 pm celebrating Gayle’s life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Defense League in honor of Gayle Whitehair.
