The oldest of four brothers, he was born Jan. 18, 1922 in Spartanburg, S.C. to George H. Baugh Sr. and Lena Mabel Whitfield. As a child, he lived briefly in Asheville, N.C. before moving to Charlotte, N.C., where he completed schooling. George graduated from Duke University, having studied economics.
George enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was trained at Parris Island in South Carolina. He later transferred into the U.S. Navy, and was trained as a pilot. While assigned to the naval air station in Alameda, Calif., he met Edie Lucille Anderson, who would become his wife of 65 years.
After completing his military service, George and Edie moved to Dallas, where George began his career with Sears, Roebuck and Co. He worked for the company from 1947 to 1985 as an executive assigned to manage various stores in Texas, Kansas and Nebraska. He helped open the Sears store at Central Park Mall in the late 1960s. During the last 13 years of his career, he was the manager of the Sears store in Amarillo. He retired to San Antonio to be closer to his family.
George was an avid reader of the Express-News and Wall Street Journal, a football fan and a golfer. After he retired, George traveled around the world.
In his later years, he exercised daily, first walking in his neighborhood during the wee hours of the morning, and then later on the treadmill at the Jewish Community Center.
George's first great-grandchild was born in 2008, and he then became known as "G3," short for "Great-Grandpa George."
He is survived by his brothers, Ruffner Baugh of Rockport; and Robert Whitfield of Wilmington, N.C.; his wife, of San Antonio; his daughter, Edith Louise Shugart and her husband David Shugart of Laguna, N.M; his son, George W. Baugh and wife Alissa Levey Baugh of San Antonio; his grandson Josh Baugh, wife Ashley Cash and daughter Emma, of San Antonio; and his granddaughter Amanda Baugh and her fiancé Jason Lee, of Chicago.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Phillip Baugh of Florence, S.C.
