

George is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Rose Mary Rosel Garza, daughter Sonya “Nikki” Hernandez, son-in-law Conrad J Hernandez, three grandchildren: Gabriella, Carolina, AJ, two sisters: Victoria (Richard) Rosas, Margo (Daniel) Villarreal, his stepmother Mary C Garza, and numerous nieces and nephews. George is reunited in Heaven with his parents and his brothers: Hector R Garza and Ralph M Garza.
George was a Brackenridge High School graduate in May of 1965.
George served the United States Army in Vietnam as a combat medic with the Americal Division, also known as the “Jungle Warriors”. During his 13-month tour, known as the “North Vietnam Tet Offensive, 1968”, his heroic actions earned him the Silver Star.
He joined the US National Guard in 1978 where he proudly served for 20 years in the Company B 136th Signal Battalion. In addition to the Silver Star, George is the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, Purple Heart, and numerous other decorations, medals, and badges.
George was an avid fisherman, known to enjoy an occasional cigar, and was happiest with and proudest of his grandchildren. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW, St. Luke’s Men’s Club, and volunteered at NIOSA.
Visitation will be held Thursday, January 25, 2024 at 6:00pm with a 7:00pm Rosary Vigil at Porter Loring Mortuary located at 1101 McCullough Ave, San Antonio, TX 78212. Followed by a private burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
Honorary Pallbearers are Conrad J Hernandez, AJ Hernandez, John Bermea, Joseph Bermea, Richard Rosas, Dan Villarreal, and Abel Flores.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Operation Homefront, or to a charity of your choice.
