George Edward Mathesen was born the youngest of 4 children on February 14, 1936 in Port Arthur, Texas to Evelyn Embertson Mathesen and Captain Alfred Mathesen. We celebrate his life following his peaceful passing at the age of 89 on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
George married the love of his life, Lucy Herber, on September 6, 1959. They lived in several locations while George was in the Army and in college. They lived in Colorado Springs, CO, where they built their own home by hand before they moved to Alamo Heights, where they lived for the past 43 years. They had 3 children, Brent, Pier and John.
George attended Texas Lutheran University before earning a BS in Commercial Art from Lamar University and an MFA in Painting from the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He was drafted into the US Army for 2 years and was stationed at Ft Sill, OK. He co-owned an interior design business and worked in advertising sales for 29 years, including several years at the San Antonio Express-News. He taught arts and crafts classes at Ft Sam Houston and at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs. Outside of his 9-to-5 job, George enjoyed expressing his creativity through painting, sculpture, and multimedia art. He found joy spending time with his family, visiting art museums, and exploring art projects.
