

Col. George M. Rodgers, age 87, passed away in San Antonio, Texas, due to health complications related to COPD. He was born in Houston to Ara Lee Smith and Manuel Rodgers and grew up in College Station. He received a B.S in Physical Education from Texas A&M College in 1950, an M.A. in Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado, and a Doctor of Divinity from the American Bible Institute.
Col. Rodgers served two tours of duty in Korea (the second one with I CORPS), one tour in Vietnam, and two tours in Germany. He retired from the U.S Army at Ft. Sam Houston, where he served as Deputy Post Commander, after 28 years of distinguished service. In 1978, he became the Commandant of Cadets at Texas Military Institute and held that position for 13 years, becoming the longest serving Commandant in TMI's history.
He was a Freemason and a Shriner, played golf and bridge, traveled, and donated to various local and national organizations. He was a member of the San Antonio A&M Club, St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church, the VFW, the American Legion, various Texas A&M organizations, and the ROMEOs.
He was preceded in death by his first son, George Marc Rodgers, and his wives, Eileen Watson Rodgers and Betty Dibrell Rodgers. He is survived by his children, Deborah Jackson of College Station, Texas, Susan Dilán and husband Héctor of Puerto Rico, James Rodgers and wife Carol of Gulfport, Mississippi, four stepchildren, 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Royce W. and Robert L. and their families.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the George M. Rodgers Corps scholarship fund via the Texas A&M Foundation.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 9, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Porter Loring on McCullough.
