In January 1969, I was assigned to the US Army 3rd Battalion, 35th Field Artillery at Peden Barracks (Wertheim, Germany). Soon after, I was appointed driver for the Battalion Commander, Colonel George M. Rodgers. Initially, I felt a little intimidated in that role. However, Colonel Rodgers soon put me at ease. Colonel Rodgers was a true gentleman, supporting a Texas friendliness and a poignant spirit. Colonel Rodgers took a genuine interest in me as a soldier and my family. For the next eighteen months, I learned much about the mighty Colonel George M. Rodgers.

Colonel Rodgers was a gifted leader who had a knack for exerting his authority respectfully and with motivating discretion. He was admired and respect by many soldiers in the battalion. Colonel Rodgers was a persuasive leader who loved serving in the military. He was a man of great moral character and purpose.

When I rotated back to the States, we stayed in touch. We exchanged Christmas cards for about a dozen years and he always inquired about my family. But then the cards stopped and we lost contact.

Over the years, I made several attempts to locate Colonel Rodgers. Then recently, I did an Internet search and came across his obituary. Sadly, Colonel Rodgers had passed away in 2017.

As I reflect back on those days in Germany, when I was fortune to have served as his driver, I remember Colonel George M. Rodgers for his vast military accomplishments and his brilliant leadership, but moreover I remember a great Texan, a man of high moral standing and a man who loved to serve his country.

He considered it an honor to be an associate of this breakfast group. George was a true gentleman and an ardant A&M fan. He will be missed by many.'

'George was married to our Mother for thirteen years. He was a blessing for our family. They met on a blind date and were married four months later. it was meant to be. Before she passed she told me it had been the happiest 13 years her life. Thank you George. You will be missed. You told me you were ready to go, I believe you have received your reward.
