George Rudolph Stumberg, III, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025. George was born to Rudolph and Ruth McDonald Stumberg on April 10, 1945, in San Antonio, Texas, where he grew up and lived most of his life. The Stumberg family was one of the earliest residents of San Antonio, and his ancestors’ lineage can be traced back to soon after the fall of The Alamo.
George graduated from Jefferson High School and Southern Methodist University, affiliations he maintained until his passing. It is said that George followed in his ancestors’ footsteps and was an entrepreneur from a very young age, hiring some of the neighborhood children to pick up the pecans in his family’s yard for which he was being paid by his father to gather. He paid them a stipend and kept the rest. George and his family traveled to Mexico on vacations annually, and there he learned to love the country and its customs. His path after college led to marriage to Judith Horner Stumberg, two children, and a myriad of careers. His work experiences included riding fences on horseback at Prude Ranch, sales, owning a Ford dealership, home development and building, working for the federal government at the RTC, and serving as a Kendall County Commissioner. He ultimately, with partners, bought the name to the Cadillac Bar in Nuevo Laredo and moved it to downtown San Antonio in a building on South Flores that had been in his family for generations. The bar was successful under his guidance and he was awarded a world record from Guinness for the world’s largest margarita as well as acknowledgement from the San Antonio Conservation Society for the renovation of Stumberg Square. Concurrently George was buying and developing retail shopping centers all over San Antonio, as well as managing the commercial offices that were part of the Cadillac Bar property.
George had many interests and hobbies that he pursued passionately: hunting and fishing with his father and friends, cooking, entertaining, and flying his airplane. He had a great love of fine food and wine, and he was an avid amateur photographer, traveling to many locations to shoot beautiful pictures. Possibly his greatest love was traveling to new cities and countries around the world. This dovetailed perfectly with food and wine and spending time with friends.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Rudolph Stumberg, and Judith Horner Stumberg.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Parker Stumberg; daughter, Heather Stumberg; son, George Rudolph Stumberg IV; stepdaughters, Courtney Veltri and Taylor Fowler (Ryan); and three grandchildren, Bennett, Carter, and Parker Fowler.
George’s Celebration of Life will be held February 11, 2025, at Christ Episcopal Church, 510 Belknap Place; San Antonio, Texas, at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
