Gertrude Helen Woelfel Palmer, of San Antonio, Texas, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, entered into eternal rest on January 19, 2018, on the exact same day of her husband's death 24 years ago. Gertrude was born in Stockton, California, on June 15, 1923, and was the seventh of ten children born to parents, Walburga Hadaller Woelfel and Alexander Charles Woelfel.
During her childhood years in Stockton, she met the love of her life, Leland Harvard Palmer. They married in 1945 shortly after the end of World War II and shared their life together for 49 years until Lee's death in 1994. Gertrude was known by all as "Trudy". She and her husband, traveled and lived in many locations, including Germany and Japan, during Lee's career as an Army officer.
In retirement, they returned to San Antonio where they lived for over 35 years. Gertrude enjoyed her hobbies including gardening, cooking, entertaining and shopping. Gertrude was an active and decades-long member of Saint Pius X Catholic Parish. In 2013, she became a resident of the Incarnate Word Retirement Community where she enjoyed new friends and an active life in the faith.
Gertrude is survived by her loving children: Dr. Patrick M. Palmer and daughter-in-law, Susan, of San Antonio, Texas; Kathleen Palmer Thomas and husband, Edward, of Quincy, Massachusetts; grandchildren: Anne Gerasimon and her husband, Dr. Greg Gerasimon; Michael Palmer; Patrick Palmer II and great-grandchildren William and Luke Gerasimon, all from San Antonio. Gertrude's parents and most of her siblings predeceased her, but she leaves her beloved younger sisters, Helen Hutchins and Joan Retzloff, and many nephews and nieces.
Gertrude wished to be remembered in happiness for a wonderful and blessed life, for her family and for good friends and neighbors. She was beloved for her friendly nature, her thoughtfulness, and devotion to family and to her Lord.
