Education found Gilbert at an early age at St. Michael’s Academy. Gilbert graduated from Central Catholic High School, class of 1954 and received a BBA from St. Mary’s University in 1957.
Gilbert had a very illustrious career in the San Antonio Fire Department receiving many accolades within his challenging career. Gilbert was an avid supporter of the Burned Out Survivors Fund working hard to insure its existence. After 36 years Gilbert retired as District Chief in 1997 and then hunting and fishing became a grand pass time with fellow retirees.
Gilbert’s spirituality was a beacon for all who knew him. His devotion to our Blessed Mother and the rosary made him a part of the Holy Trinity Rosary Ministry. He made rosaries for our enlisted/retired soldiers out of camouflaged cord. Many rosaries ended up in combat and peace time around a soldier’s neck. Perpetual Adoration was also a favorite of Gilbert’s. Many days he was seen at Blessed Sacrament church devoutly adoring the blessed sacrament.
As a young college student Gilbert joined other athletes, students and professionals and formed the SA Wolverine Council. A council that dedicated its efforts to better International efforts with their goal to Help A Kid internationally. The major annual fundraiser was a football game at Alamo Stadium, the Wolverines versus Mexico Monterrey Tech! A true hands-on effort of the fortunate helping the unfortunate.
Helping others was important to Gilbert. In his quiet, deliberate way he supported The March of Dimes and all Firefighters charitable endeavors. Supporting his wife’s philanthropic endeavors was a mission for Gilbert. In Memphis, Gilbert supported St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Catholic Charities of Memphis and Opera Memphis and this all continued when they permanently moved to San Antonio. Loading his truck with clothing, furniture or auction items was a joy because it was helping the least fortunate. Catholic Charities of SA was indeed a favorite.
Gilbert’s 88 years were filled with joy and sorrow. He was a spiritual, kind and humble person. His wealth was his family. His wife, children and grandchildren learned many lessons from Popo, as he was called in our family. He was skilled and had a mighty work ethic that he tried to convey to the younger generation. Fun times were always memorable. Off to the beach, fishing, Sea World, movies, Christmas hayrides, building a swing set, bible classes and all in a loud, fun eight-seater van.
Popo, we were sad when Parkinson as well as cancer consumed your body. For three years you showed us how we should have faith and accept the will of God. When you lost your voice and no longer could speak to us, God gave you the most beautiful smile. Thank you Popo for being a beautiful example of kindness and humility. You have made us a better person. We will always love you and will miss you!
