
The Angels came for Gilbert Greer Wright III on Monday, November 12, 2001. Mr. Wright was a descendant of two prominent ranching families, a grandson of James Madison Chittim of San Antonio and the great-grandson of Christopher Columbus Slaughter of Dallas, Texas, both of whom were noted pioneer cattlemen and trail drivers. He was born November 7, 1919 and attended and graduated from San Antonio Academy, Texas Military Institute, the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee, and the Law School at the University of Texas at Austin, Texas. He held a Batchelor of Arts, Batchelor of Law and Doctor of Juris Prudence Degrees. Mr. Wright served as a pilot, Captain, in the Air Force during World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation, for his service in the China-Burma-India Theater of War. Mr. Wright lived in Houston 3 years and was a member of the Houston Club. He also lived in Bogota, Columbia where he was Manager of Forest Oil Corporation's Affairs. He was a member of the Bogota Country Club and the Jockey Club. Mr. Wright returned to Corpus Christi, Texas where he lived for 20 years and was Vice-President and member of the Board of Directors of Forest Oil Corporation. He was Commodore of the Corpus Christi Yacht Club, President of the Town Club and was the 1979 Master of Ceremonies of the DePineda Presentation. He was a member of the Kings Men and was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Southwest State Bank. He also served as Senior Warden of the Episcopalian Church of the Good Shepherd. Mr. Wright was a Past President of the Order of the Alamo, and a member of the San Antonio Country Club, the Conopus Club, the German Club, the Texas Cavaliers, The Argyle and Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Charlotte Rosemary Hume Wright; and 4 children, Elizabeth Wright Bondurant and husband, Charles, Suzanne Wright Vollmer and husband, Ferdinand, Gilbert Greer Wright IV and Dr. Heather Hume Wright, DVM. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Anne Wright Basse and husband, Edgar Alfred Jr, and Dela Wright White; 5 grandchildren, Suzanne Wright Bondurant, Caroline Chittim Bondurant, Alexander Wright Vollmer and twin granddaughters, Madison Elizabeth Wright and Mallory Cathryn Wright; and numerous other kin.
