Glen Matula, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on January 17, 2025, at the age of 99, in San Antonio, Texas.
Glen was born on December 24, 1925, in Cotulla, Texas, the daughter of Allison and Gladys Favor. She married Theo Matula on October 25, 1947. They enjoyed traveling before they started a family and raised two daughters. They were married 55 years until Theo’s death in 2002.
Glen grew up hunting and fishing with her grandfather and was a self-described “tomboy”. She excelled at sports, lettering in basketball. She was also an excellent marksman. Glen also loved playing the coronet in her high school band and going to competitions. As an adult, she took to playing golf. She belonged to the Windcrest golf club for almost 50 years where she enjoyed long lasting friendships and served as treasurer and president in the women’s golf association. She played golf until the age of 90 and achieved the "hole in one" status in her earlier years.
Glen also had a soft heart for cats and there was never a stray that would cross her yard that she would not feed. At one time she became involved in trapping, neutering and rehoming litters of cats. She always had a cat by her side.
Glen was a gracious and beautiful woman. She was one of the most selfless and humble of people. Throughout her life, she consistently put the happiness and comfort of others above her own needs. She will be greatly missed, but she put her trust in the Lord and will be with Him forever.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theo, and her brother, David Favor.
She is survived by her daughters, Carol Smith and husband Kevin, and Kathleen Matula; grandson Matthew DiSiena; stepdaughter Barbara Ann Scroggs, step grandchildren Tamera Shedd, Lesa Deakin, and Norman Scroggs, and many step great and great-great grandchildren; nieces Susan Sewald and Elizabeth Calhoun and nephews David Matula and Henry Matula.
The family will celebrate her life with a private graveside ceremony at Sunset Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alley Cat Allies, the Alzheimer’s Association, or a charity of your choice.
The family is so thankful for the excellent and compassionate care provided by the medical technicians, caregivers and staff at Shavano Park Senior Living, the AIP Hospice team and Glen’s personal caregivers who watched over her in her last days.
