Grace Symons Bailey

Grace E. Bailey Formerly Grace E. Ingram of San Antonio was invited to an eternal celebration by our Lord on February 11, 2011, ending her 5-year battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Grace was born in Henrietta, TX December 13, 1923 to Edward and Frieda Symons. She attended high school in Henrietta and in her last two years cared for her grandmother and worked for the only doctor in the county. After high school she attended Draughon's Business College in Fort Worth. In 1943 she married Harry Collins, a mechanical design engineer, and they moved his firm from Fort Worth to San Antonio, TX. Four years later the marriage ended.

In 1948 she married Robert W. Ingram, a co-owner/founder of several firms in the field of heavy road construction equipment manufacturing, iron works and sand and gravel. They were active in San Antonio events and charities. Grace was deeply involved in Laurel Heights Methodist Church and the Blue Birds outreach to the community through fundraisers for hospitals, Goodwill and opening a series of homes for homeless girls. In 1956 Robert died after a heart attack.

Grace remarried an Army Officer, William A. Bailey and moved to Waco, TX where he was assigned. Over the next 9 years the family moved with Army assignments to Fort Leonard Wood, MO; Heidelberg, Germany and eventually back to their beloved San Antonio where he retired in 1966. In 1965 she went to work at Northside State Bank as an Administrative Assistant and rose through the banking industry, finally retiring as a Vice-President. She and Bill Bailey loved their home in Bel Meade and enjoyed gardening, activities in their community and fishing at their lake house on Lake LBJ. She was active in the Engineer Wives Club, Garden Club and Travis Park Methodist Church. After Bill's death in 1990, she moved her church membership back to the place where her heart was, Laurel Heights Methodist Church and served on several committees and activities there.

Grace had one sister and three brothers, two who survive her, Herman Symons and Donald Symons. She has a son, Robert L. Ingram and a step-daughter Betty Bailey-Lucas. She is also survived by Robert W. Ingram's daughter, Colleen Ingram Williams. Her grandchildren, Leah Cardenas and Joshua Ingram were her deep love.
