Dr. Granville Eugene Horton, age 89, was called home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on December 10, 2016. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Granville Horton and Etna Pearl Boyle Horton; his loving wife of 44 years, Millie Horton and a sister, Wanda Garlington.
Gene, as he was known by most, was born July 2, 1927 in Jean, Texas. He graduated high school from Graham, Texas and served two years in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Charleston, S.C. After his return, he attended and graduated from Texas Tech College. He then attended the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, from which he graduated in 1953 and married his beloved Mildred Helen Veale that June 13th.
Dr. Horton practiced Internal and Nuclear Medicine in Wharton, Texas where he and Millie raised their three children – Linda, Kevin and Scott. In 1975, Dr. Horton entered the U.S. Air Force as a Major, was promoted to Colonel and, after training in Aerospace Medicine, served as Flight Surgeon at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio until 1982. He joined Occupational Medical Clinic of San Antonio, which is today known as Concentra Medical, and served as Regional Director for over 20 years before retiring at age 81 in January of 2009. After retirement, Gene was active for a few years in volunteering at Institute for Texan Cultures, where he loved the school children. He also volunteered at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital in the Admissions and Cardiac Catheter lab, where he loved to help put patients at ease.
Gene enjoyed music and was an accomplished pianist. He loved to share music with his family, to whom he passed that love and passion, and enjoyed season tickets to the San Antonio Symphony. He was an avid reader and loved history and current events. However, he was happiest when he was surrounded by his family. His smile, hugs, laughter and love will be missed by everyone who loved him.
Gene is survived by his three children, Linda and husband, Ken of Seguin, Kevin and wife, Lauri of San Antonio and Scott of Cedar Park; triplet sisters, Annice Horton Chorn, Janice Horton Browning and Agnes Horton Stamps; grandchildren, Mark and wife, Veronica, Stephen and wife, Kristin, Daniel and wife, Sarah and Caleb; and recently three great grandchildren, Hattie, Charlie and Etta.
