Greg was born August 14, 1932, in Dallas, Texas, the only child of Jacob and Mildred Robertson. As a boy, he moved to Harlingen where he attended Harlingen High School and met the love of his life, Donna LaBounty. They both attended the University of Texas in Austin, where Greg graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1953. Since their parents would not allow them to get married until they finished college, Greg and Donna married on graduation day. They moved to Dallas for Greg to attend Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University where he graduated in May 1956 with a Master of Divinity.
He went on to complete his Doctorate of Divinity at the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
Greg lived a life of service and faith. He served his first appointment as associate pastor of University United Methodist Church in Austin from 1956-1958. He continued serving as a pastor to churches throughout Texas, including San Angelo, Corpus Christi, Columbus, Edinburg, San Antonio and Austin, where he was also appointed as a District Superintendent. He was involved in building new churches and strengthened the ministry to youth in each congregation.
Greg was devoted to his children, Martha and John, and to Donna, who was always by his side in both life and ministry. He and Donna served in missions to Guatemala for many years, he as the pastor, she as the cook. They loved to travel, especially to Crested Butte, Colorado, where they vacationed and skied with friends for many years, long after others their age would have been content to sit by the fire.
Greg often quipped he ‘failed at retirement’ as he continued serving in various capacities at University United Methodist Church into his eighties. During their time in assisted living facilities, Greg led Bible studies and church services. One of his last acts of service was to oversee and dedicate a baptismal font and columbarium at University United in loving tribute to Donna.
Greg was always a ‘go to’ for a good prayer, a helping hand, and wise counsel. He had a remarkable ability to suspend judgment and meet others where they were, no matter their circumstance or challenges. He led with love and curiosity, eager to learn about others and open to new perspectives. Those who knew him would attest he was both a gentleman and gentle man.
Greg is preceded in death by his parents, Jacob ‘Jake’ Ross Robertson and Mildred Crowley Robertson, his wife Donna Jeanne Robertson, and his granddaughter, Morgan Claire Dunn. He is survived by his children Martha Dunn of Dallas, Texas and John Robertson (Terri) of San Antonio, Texas; his grandchildren, Kyle, Trey (Crissanta), Cody (Alexandra) Robertson and Hanford Dunn (Rebeca); and his great-grandchildren Adalyn Robertson and Kennedy, Riley and Logan Dunn.
A Celebration of Life service will be Sunday, September 7, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. at University Methodist Church, 5084 De Zavala Road, San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to UMC Foundation, 5084 De Zavala Rd., San Antonio, TX 78249 or a charity of their choice.
