Harold "Hal" R. Klein, age 78, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2012 in San Antonio. He was born November 3, 1934 in Kansas City, Missouri. Hal became a life member of Heavenwood Country Club on December 16th.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Gerry, son Mike and daughter Kathleen Fields, son-in-law David Fields, grandchildren Kristen and Michael, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Hal was pre-deceased by his father George Klein, mother Kathleen Trent, and his three brothers and one sister.
Hal was born in Kansas City, MO, where he graduated from North Kansas City High School. He was both an accomplished football player and baseball pitcher. He was part of the St. Louis Cardinals minor league program in the mid 1950's, and threw a no-hitter while in the organization. Rather than be placed in an out-of-town location, he decided to embark on his career with Roadway Express Truck Lines, where he worked for over 35 years.
He met the love of his life, Gerry, soon after at The Lake of the Ozarks, and they soon married and started their family. As Hal was promoted within the firm, the family moved every three or four years - often times with short notice - having lived in Kansas City, South Bend, IN, Chicago, Oklahoma City, Milwaukee, and San Antonio. They retired in the mid 90's and traveled regularly to their favorite destinations of Estes Park, CO, Jackson Hole, WY, San Diego, CA, and Lake Louise/Banff, Alberta.
Hal had many accomplishments including being a terrific husband, father, grandfather, manager, friend, mentor, and role model. However, at the end of the day, he knew that all that mattered was his relationship with the Lord. He had a true servant's heart, and always put the Lord and his family first.
His signature "smiley face" and a favorite verse from scripture were always hand-written at the bottom of all of his correspondence to family, friends and business associates. He is now with the Lord smiling down upon us all with a daily set tee time of 2:48 at Heavenwood Country Club. Well done, good and faithful servant! Praised be the name of the Lord!
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 20, 2012, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
