Harry was born on June 18, 1932, in San Angelo, TX, to Darrel Burrows Wright and Edith Montae Nabors Wright.
He grew up in West Texas and graduated from Coleman High School where he enjoyed playing on the football, basketball and tennis teams. Harry attended Texas A&M University when it was still known as the Agriculture and Mechanical College of Texas and was a member of the Texas Aggie Corp of Cadets. He graduated in 1954 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. His first job was with Shamrock Oil & Gas as a pipeline engineer in Dumas, Texas. He met his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth Kohler, while working in Dumas, married in 1957. Harry and Elizabeth moved to Amarillo, Texas in 1958 where their first son, Harry Douglas Jr. was born in 1960. Soon after, their second son, David Clyde, was born in 1961. Harry dedicated the majority of his career to Diamond Shamrock in Amarillo serving as Vice President of Pipelines and Terminals. In 1985, he and Elizabeth relocated to Diamond Shamrock headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. Harry was passionate about his job and grew the pipelines and terminals division throughout his career. He always prioritized his staff and was known for routinely visiting personnel out in the field on a regular basis. Early in Harry’s career as a manager, he would ask: Are you an “I” person or a “We” person as he believed that teamwork was key for organizational success. Harry’s career with Diamond Shamrock continued for 42 years before retiring in 1996.
Harry’s family was always his first priority, and he cherished fishing, camping, hiking the Colorado mountains and playing tennis with them. Having traveled overseas, his most memorable vacations were spent with his family in their Airstream RV in Colorado. One of his fondest memories was backpacking in the Pecos Wilderness with Douglas and David on a 50-mile trip. Another favorite retreat for Harry and his family was the Palo Duro Club located at the beginning of the Palo Duro Canyon. Harry was passionate about and competitive with his tennis game while enjoying fellowship with his long-time tennis buddies from Amarillo, the Palo Duro Club & San Antonio. He was 87 years old when he retired his racket. Harry was an avid supporter of Texas A&M and he never missed watching an Aggie football game. During his last years, streaming professional tennis matches and Aggie football almost burned out their TV.
Harry’s father was a carpenter and real estate wheeler dealer that taught him the skill and tricks of the trade. Harry passed on these same skills and his strong work ethic to his sons. Both David and Douglas recall a week’s work project where the whole family, including Elizabeth, replaced their entire roof. Harry was known as a quiet and reserved man and when he spoke, he held his audience’s attention. His love and wisdom were immeasurable. When Dad / Grandpa spoke, everyone would listen. Harry was a huge supporter of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all their pursuits. Although quiet, Harry had a great singing voice and loved to listen to country & western music and would often accompany Glenn Campbell singing one of his favorite songs “Rhinestone Cowboy”.
A very important part of Harry's life was serving God and others at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Amarillo and then San Pedro Presbyterian Churcn in San Antonio, Texas. Harry served as an Elder and Deacon in Amarillo.
Harry was a devoted husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa. He was deeply loved by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sue Bedford, his sister, Helen Kirkpatrick, his brother, Charles and his daughter-in-law Julie Wright.
