Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he moved with his parents James and Adele Jones to San Antonio at age 6. He attended Lock Hill School on Fredericksburg Road, Mark Twain Middle School, and Jefferson High School. He graduated from San Angelo High School in 1948 and returned to San Antonio. There he met his wife to be of 64 years, Marilyn Gibson.
Before their marriage, he had been called to service, spending the next two years in training and front line duty as a U.S. Army artillery forward observer during the Korean War. He returned to San Antonio as Sgt. 1st Class and left the military to work with his father's construction company in Austin.
He began his construction training as a teenager in San Angelo by helping his father and crew build the First Methodist Church. His father taught him well and encouraged him to develop his knowledge. In Austin, Harvey enrolled in the Engineering School at UT for a semester, but living expenses and a growing family's needs intervened. He worked for his father building schools in the area, remodeling an office in the Capitol Building, renovation of the Bastrop County Courthouse, and other commercial projects.
Harvey and Marilyn had four children: Sharon, Harvey Jr., Shirley, and Sandra. After his father's death, the family moved to San Antonio where Harvey worked as construction superintendent for several builders and eventually began his own company named HARVEY JONES BUILDING. He built many residential homes and also contracted to build commercial structures.
A loving husband and father, Harvey supported his wife's and children's careers and interests. He will be remembered by all as a skilled builder, a fair-to-all businessman, and a devoted family man. He loved deer hunting and fishing at the coast. He was a licensed pilot of small planes and flew to many Texas cities. With Marilyn, he traveled to Europe and Germany, to Hawaii, and to Puerto Rico. In his retirement, he met his lifetime goal of owning a ranch and farm. He enjoyed working at his ranch in La Pryor, raising cattle for auction, planting and tending a kitchen vegetable garden, and improving the property with irrigation. To his family, he seemed the happiest in his life.
He is preceded in death by his parents and by his son, Harvey Jones, Jr. He is survived by his wife Marilyn; by his daughters Sharon Schweitzer and husband Mike; Shirley Bennett and husband Richard; Sandra Thomson and husband Orrin; by his grandchildren Monica Sonier, Steven Jones, James Huston and wife Brandy, and Marina Schweitzer; by many cousins and other family in Ft. Worth/Dallas, Utah, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Missouri, and Puerto Rico; and by his great grandson Connor Huston.
