

Lt.Col. Harvey Maahs, U. S. Air Force (ret.) was born in Tilleda, Wisconsin, August 28, 1917 and passed away on February 13, 2014 at age 96. He graduated from Carroll College in Waukeshaw, Wisconsin and received his Master’s Degree in Education from Southwest Texas State University. He served 30 years in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot. Among his many assignments were flying the Berlin Air Lift, Vietnam, and the Pentagon. After his military career, he taught school for ten years in the Harlandale ISD. He was an active member of the San Antonio Poets’ Association, and served as their president. He was also a founding member of the Alamo Area poets of Texas and was on the board of the San Antonio Poetry Fair.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lydia Reinert Maahs and his father, Walter Maahs. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Iris, and children: daughters, Pat Runge and husband Richard of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, daughter Melissa Maahs of Denver, Colorado; sons, Larry Maahs and wife, Jan of Tampa, Florida, Richard Maahs and wife Nancy of Madison, Wisconsin, Douglas Maahs and wife Tobi of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Harvey Maahs, Jr. of Gainesville, Florida; step children, Dana Day and husband Arthur Day of Houston, Texas, Gary Dounson and wife Carol of Gainesville, Florida; grandchildren, Ian Maahs, Jennifer Maahs, Michelle Hanson, Linda Arndt, Mike Runge, Tom Runge, Chris Weiss, Ben Mills, Hannah Mills, Wallace Mills, Jamison Maahs, Scott Maahs, Whitney Maahs, James Maahs, Julie Maahs, Jo Ann Maahs; step grandchildren, Stelli Munnis, Lauren Day, Lindsey Day and Stephen Day.
Visitation will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 20th at Sunset Funeral Chapel with the Funeral Service at 12:00 p.m., Reverend Jeff Munnis officiating. Burial will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with Full Air Force Honors.
