
A native of El Paso, he was a 1949 graduate from El Paso High School in El Paso, TX. He had a Pre-med education at the University of Texas at El Paso, El Camino College, and The University of Southern California, graduated with a B.A. Degree in Biology and minor in Chemistry in August 1955 from the University of Texas in El Paso, post graduate education at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich 1955-1960, graduate Cum Laude in December of 1960.
He was a member of the Bexar County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, and American Academy of Family Practice.
He was chief of Staff of Lutheran General Hospital in 1970, Chief of Family Practice at Lutheran General Hospital, Southwest General Hospital and currently active staff member at the Metropolitan Hospital and staff member of Santa Rosa Children's Hospital, Santa Rosa Hospital, and Baptist Memorial Hospitals.
He served the San Antonio community as a devoted and dedicated physician for over 40 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War.
Dr. Samaniego was appointed to serve as member at large of the Lutheran General Medical Staff in 1988. Dr Samaniego joined Lutheran General in 1966 and over the past 22 years has served as Chief of Staff, Vice President and Chairman of Family Practice.
As a loving father, brother and grandfather, he loved golf, music, sailing, and enjoyed his continuation of education and appreciated the value of learning new things in life.
Dr. Samaniego leaves behind his beloved wife, Brigitte; son, Dr. Hector X. Samaniego, Jr; daughters, Martha B. Samaniego, Christa A. Samaniego all of San Antonio, TX, and Carmen A. Samaniego, Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; grandchildren, Catherine M. Herrera, Humberto Trevino, both of San Antonio, TX, Andreas X. Samaniego-Clark, Fair Oaks, TX, Karla Samaniego, Nicole Samaniego, both of San Antonio, TX, Isabella Samaniego-Clark, Fair Oaks, TX, and Michelle Samaniego, San Antonio, TX; great grandson, Duncan Ortega, San Antonio, TX; sisters, Bertha S. Onopa-Rios and Irma S. Portillo, both of El Paso, TX; brothers, Ramon J. Samaniego, Huntsville, AL and Rodolfo R. Samaniego, Atlanta, GA.
Dr. Samaniego will be dearly missed by his family, friends and patients.
